American fashion designer Michael Kors can answer that. According to Kors 70 percent of the clothes you own should be meat and potatoes. 30 percent should be icing and fluffthats color pattern shine and accessories. Too many women get the proportions the other way round then cant figure out why they cant get dressed. In other words a womans closet needs to have a foundation with classic essential pieces. Your closet will see fashion trends come and go but foolproof classics will never lose their appeal. Yes following fashion trends is frivolous and fun when you take those fashion risks with confidence but playing it safe with classics is just as trendy too The perfect wardrobe should be collected with certain quality key pieces that are timeless and can work throughout the years for any occasion. Classics dont have to be boring either. You can build those staples with current cool trends icing and fluff or just have unique twists to those traditional piec- es. With the following five essentials your closet will have a core foundation and you will never have to doubt your wardrobe again. Whether you are going for a professional or casual look a black blazer is perfect for any occasion. With either a pair of jeans pants or a dress the black blazer is a great layer for an outfit. Try a tailored blazer for a more feminine appeal or a long black boyfriend blazer for a cool street style look. 2 3 4 5 1 6 A pair of indigo denim jeans works best for day to night alternatives. In the daytime pair it with a white v-neck and black blazer with minimal jewelry for a clean chic style. At night pair your jeans with a colorful patterned top for a glam night on the town. If you want to keep it really classy opt for an ankle length jean. They look great in heels and they are easy to cover with tall boots The little black dress LBD A wardrobe staple that is sim- ple elegant and sophisticated that comes in many cuts and styles. If you really have nothing to wear this is a go-to Whether you want a refined office ready look or a flirty date night getup a little black dress is your choice. The LBD can be found anywhere at any store and made by any designer. It can be styled so easily with pops of color statement jewelry or a silk scarf. Make sure that the dress is simple in design and not too trendy so you can style it differently every time. Give thanks to fashion icon Coco Chanel for the creation As stated by fashion consultant Tim Gunn whether paired with dress pants a skirt or jeans a classic white shirt is always polished and sophis- ticated. A white collared shirt is basic and versatile that is easy to dress up or down. It is also the best piece to use when you want to layer. Tuck a crisp white shirt into a pencil skirt and pair it with a collared statement necklace wear it under an oversized sweater or wear it alone a little unbut- toned with distressed jeans and booties for an effortless comfortable look. Black pumps are the epitome of feminine and sexy. Adding a black-heeled pump can turn any outfit from casual to chic. Even if you are not the heel type you may want a pair of black pumps just in case weddings dates etc.. Luckily heels come in a good range of lengths and styles so make sure you choose a heel that is comfortable for you. You can choose between leather patent or suede for texture and either stiletto wedge or block for heel type among others. Make sure to pick a combination that is versatile too. A leather mid length heel is always a great choice. 1. Black Blazer 2. Indigo Denim Jeans 3. The LBD 4. White Collared Shirt 5. Black Pumps 6. Red Lipstick Although this next essential isnt something you would place in your clos- et a classic red lipstick needs to be mentioned A bold red lip dresses up any outfit with minimal effort. And again it is feminine and sexy. With a simple tee or a LBD a red lip stands out and can accessorize your look even if you didnt mean to. Adding a touch of red lip to your outfit instant- ly grabs attention elevates your look and exudes confidence. There are ranges of reds to choose from in all types of finishes. My favorite is a highly pigmented matte red. 8 Pole By Katie Johnson Fitness Why Forwomenwhove beenraisedtohate theirbodiesandfeel ashamedoftheir sexuality--dancingis anoutletthatempow- ersthemtoreclaim both.Beingawoman iscomplicated. 9 When most people hear Pole Dancer they immediately think Stripper. But thats like equating Lawyer with Litigator or Doctor with Brain Surgeon one is a specific type of the broader first category. The truth is the world of pole dance like any oth- er community or profession is multifaceted. The what where and why of the women who participate is such a vast array. The arena which pulled my focus and has become a de- fining part of my life is on the pole fitness end of the spectrum. Specifically the sensual feminine moment. This style of dance fo- cuses more on how movement feels rather than how it looks. Its not choreography based on 8 counts or unison dancing. We believe each dancers body has a unique way of expressing itself and our job is to facilitate those bodies finding their voices. Perhaps you saw the viral film Why I Dance I was one of those dancers. Thats what Im talking about. If you didnt see it heres what GQ had to say For women whove been raised to hate their bodies and feel ashamed of their sexuality--dancing is an outlet that empow- ers them to reclaim both. Being a woman is complicated. Youre supposed to be 100 accessible as a sexual object at all times but without ever acting on it or--god forbid--taking any sexual agency of your own. Dont want to be called a prude or a slut Easy. Just do everything and its opposite all at once. Grabbing life by the pole as it were is a re- jection of that double stan- dard. A group of Los An- geles-based dancers wanted to share that transformative power with the world at large--perhaps to help pole dancing shed some of its ludicrous stigma and hope- fully bring some new danc- ers into the fold. Their film Why I Dance is mesmeriz- ing. So many gyms work outs and dance studios make prom- ises of lost weight toning sculpting shaping building but the un- derlying message is always the same Change your body. At my home studio S Factor Los Angeles www.sfactor.com we teach that your body is good enough just as it is. It doesnt need to be changed to be worthy of love admiration or sex. As founder Sheila Kelley says Your body is like a savant child that just wants to make you happy but doesnt speak your language. So you have to learn to speak its instead. If our bodies really were our children most of us would have had Child Protective Services take them away by now. We think and say horrible things about our bodies on a dai- ly bases and do even worse things in the name of diet and exercise. The crazy thing is taking the focus off working out you still get in great shape Ive been on this journey of speaking my bodys language through pole dancing for the past six years and can honestly say Im in the best shape of my life. I have more strength and flexibility than when I was a serious ballet dancer in my teens. Im not a willowy skinny girl but thats not healthy for my body. If it is for yours more power to you I have a curvy pin up body. And pole dance works with my curves instead of against them like running or weight lifting can do too often. Pole dance also requires kinetic awareness. Basically any time you Pole dance also requires kinetic awareness. Basically any time you climb or invert your brain has to work double time recali- brating your orientation in space. Its like doing Suduko for your re- flexes and motor skills. It makes your smarter as well as stronger. And unlike stripping for money or competition pole sports this soft sensual expression can be as public or as private as you like. My home studio only allows women in class and we have no mirrors. Its a private intimate space to safely explore your dance without judg- ment. We teach that not only are there no negative emotions but that all emotions are sexy and can be released through movement heightened by music. In their dances Ive seen women giggle play- fully atop the pole weep heavily on the floor and flip chairs in raw steaming anger. And its all hot. We affectionately call it Fight Club for Girls. My first three years as a student were deeply personal. Very fewpeopleknew.Therewerenopicturesorvideosandcertainlynoth- ing associating a nice girl like me with pole dancing on the Internet. Now Im on staff as a writer for Bad Kitty the number one pole fit- ness brand in the country and am a proudly public voice within the pole community. But that was all a natural evolution for me find- ing my bodys voice then boldly speaking my truth on the page. Its different for every- one. So if reading all this theres a little voice inside you thats saying Yes Me too then I strongly encour- age you to follow that urge into your local pole studio Give it a try If youre wor- ried that your not in good enough shape to try let that go. Too often Ive heard women say I need to go back to the gym and loose how-ever-many pounds then Ill come with you to pole class But its not true Because youre lifting and maneuvering your own body weight different levels and styles of tricks will come in for you when you are ready. But most beginner pole tricks are not even strength tricks. They come from physics playing with spinning weight count- er balance and gravity. Anyone whos not afraid can be successful with them. Believe me we when I say the hardest part of your first pole class is putting aside your fears and judgments and walking in the door. Photo Credit Lauren Lynn Manzano on set of Why I Dance. They force you to hide from the world. They keep you prisoner in your own head. Im not talking about spiders clowns or even the word moist... Yeah I said it and its an awful word. These nasty captors are your fears. Residing in front of your sub- conscious and behind your smile. They are what you see in the mirror what you think about when youre simply having lunch. Yet somehow they are part of you. Part of what makes us human. Which in a way connects us all. Its a big slice of humble pie to know youre not the only one and that what you are feeling is absolutely normal and has been felt and dealt with since the beginning of man and woman kind. Ashley is one of the most beautiful charming funny and outgo- ing people I know. Like any normal late 20s something female she was at the point in her life to decide her path. You may be Isabel Herrman is an artist first believes in humanity and strides everyday to make the world a better place. Her experiences and stories are shared to further connect us all. When shes not writing about life you can find her at the beach or in a coffee shop soaking in the worlds beauty or simply people watching. thinking late 20s Isnt that late to start a career or still be indecisive and insecure She was afraid that she missed her calling and would be stuck in the restaurant industry forev- er. Her fear of growing up began to consume her. She began detaching from her friends because she thought they were to blame for holding her back. She stopped having a sense of hu- mor because she thought it made her immature. Ashley gave up her charm to her fears because she was trapped. What am I doing Im almost 30 single and just now deciding to make a life No man no money no motivation... And now no friends. All I could say to her was there is no timetable to life and you are never too old or young to feel anything. She was so afraid that she let herself down and so afraid to start over. But something clicked something in Ashley changed in that very moment. I dont like who Ive become. I have given everyone around me all of my energy focus and time that I lost track of my own. Here I am wondering where time had gone well I know. I gave it away. I gave myself away. Her fear wasnt about a timetable her fear was about feeling accepted. She spent her life dedicated to those around her loving kind and generous to everyone. But what do you do for you Ashley She was stumped. Make other people happy I suppose. In her head in that moment Ashley faced her biggest fear. Accepting herself. Accepting that she was a super awesome human with a huge heart. That she was forgetting to give her- self the same devotion as everyone around her. We all have been beaten with always look out for yourself first yadda yadda. But there is something huge to take away from Ashleys story of facing her fear she took the time for herself to discover a part of her that she didnt realize was there and she allowed herself to feel surprised. That moment and yes in one moment she was free from her own prison. Within a week she visited a career counselor and took a step towards HER path. One that she alone chose and one that at the beginning of the day she greets with excitement. Fears are negative beliefs. I was once told that a belief is just a thought that you think a lot. Um... So stop thinking about it No. Think about it give your fears the opportunity to die. Ashley didnt just stop thinking about feeling inadequate and behind. She gave her fear the same love patience and kindness she gave to everyone... fear was part of her. It was time she gave herself some attention. She questioned that nasty creep and ac- cepted that SHE was the only one who could squish it. Fear has a wide pendulum swing and sometimes they are a re- sult of a bad situation. Just remember you are in charge of you. Your fears belong to you for as long as you allow them to stay. Hu- mans are wonderful our minds can change in just one moment... Aside from carrying a variety of different designers its where brides come in to get custom designed outfits for various wedding functions. Thats my main line putting together the entire entourage of the wedding party from the bride to the groom. I am also a stylist and provide the whole look for the wedding with photography videography hair and make up. I also set appointments with the wedding planner etc. at the store so its a one-stop shop for the bride Q How long have you had your store and what sets you apart from other more traditional sari lines A This location is new but I have been designing for over 25 years before I moved to the United States. I sold my line in a lot of the de- signers stores in India Singapore and Dubai. My line is a mixture of east meets west and I have been designing ready to wear saris since I was 25 years old so that its easy for anyone to drape a sari. Q How do you select which designers you will feature in your store AI absolutely have to love the designers work myself before I can sell it. Mainly I aim to add variety to the store so any one client can walk out with ten to fifteen outfits that will not be similar in any way. We have a vast clientele which are not only Indian but also anyone who would like to wear an outfit with an eastern flair to it Q Bright colors seem to be a theme in your clothes how do color and fabric play a part in the designs you feature A I love color. I think color is so important in our lives as it brings joy and livens up the person wearing it Fabrics have to be soft malleable and pure. It is also a great way to add on to your Halloween costumes. Important Notes Before Getting Started 18 1. Choose your colors at first stick with no more than three. 2. Section an inch piece of hair that you want colored and get it wet so the color will stick better. Tip This is recommended for everyone but blondes. Dont wet blonde hair too much unless you want the color to stay longer. Just dampen blonde hair a bit. 3. Use the chalk in a downward motion. Make sure not to go up and down with the chalk because this will roughen and increase frizz in your hair. Twist your hair as you chalk. Tip Make sure you start with the lightest color first so you can build the color to where you desire. 4. Repeat step 2 on other pieces. Eventually using the brighter colors. 5. Either let hair dry naturally or use a blow dryer. 6. Seal the color in with a flat iron or curling iron. And spray with hairspray to set the look. 7. When youre ready wash out the color. Tip In lighter hair or more porous hair the color may last a couple shampoos. You can use a clarifying shampoo to speed up the process. Step 3 4 Step 5 Final Look Step 6 19 Step 1 2 A Review of the Film Festival Favorite Becoming Lucy By Arielle Nieshalla It takes a lot of gumption to make a film about a well-known beloved actor especially one from another era. It requires an insane amount of research meticulous wardrobeset planning and a whole lot of guts. Even then many of these ambitious films come off cheap and empty. I was pleasantly surprised to see that wasnt the case with Becoming Lucy. Even though I previously knew of the films success at well-known festivals both local and international the Festi- val De Cannes the Burbank Film Festival ITSA Film Festival Cinerockom International Film Festival and the Feminist Queer International Film Festival to name only a few I was still a tad cautious going in to my first viewing. How could anyone imbue the spirit of Lucille Ball both on- and offstage How could a short film possibly begin to scrape the surface of a story so full How could a low budget film sell me on something that I doubted even a Hollywood blockbuster could pull off convincingly And all in 19 minutes What first caught my eye was the attention to detail actress Alexis Nich- ols put into every aspect of her performance as Lucille Ball. Its a daunting task to undertake and one that she rose to the challenge of as her winning Cinerockoms Best Actress Em- erald Award attests to. Whether it was Lucy doing a classic Lucy bit the hilarious Vitameatavegamin young Lucy in love with Desi Arnaz or older Lucille Ball talking about her past I bought it. Its a tribute to Lucille Ball a little love letter to her indomitable spirit. Any good tribute finds a way to give its viewers a little of that love. It certainly did for me. Can I see my house from here Give everyone my love and tell John to stay out of my room Love Katie Hi Dad We walked ALL OVER Barcelona today. Man am I tired. Time for some wine and tapas. Gina says hi too. See you soon Rob OMG Sarah you will not believe how hot all the guys are in Italy. Its a total dream. I met this guy at the disco last night Angelo and we stayed out dancing till like 500 am. The sky was getting light seriously. Wish you were here xoxo Roxie No matter who you want to write to on your next trip write some post- cards They are a fun and inexpensive way to let your loved ones know you were thinking about them while on your adventures. And in to- days modern age of tweets posts and pokes its nice to find something more exciting than bills and penny-savers in the mailbox on occasion. What kind of post card should you send Whatever strikes your fancy There are cards of places youve been sights youve seen and more. Some are big some are small some are matte or glossy but all offer the sender a chance to share a small slice of their excitement and discovery with friends back home. Or consider exploring one of the many new postcard apps available on your smartphone. Snapshot Postcard www.snapshotpostcard.com for iPhone is one of my favorites and Touchnote www.touchnote.com for android and laptops is a good one too. With these apps you can be the author and photographer Just upload your favorite moments from your trip jot down your messages and with a couple quick clicks away it is whisked to be printed and sent wherever you wish. The typical postcard has roughly 4 square inches of message space at most so keep your notes short and sweet. And remember these things dont have envelopes so keep your messages kid friendly and non-in- criminating Write a poem or song a haiku or even a riddle to keep your readers guessing until you get home. Fancy yourself as an artist Draw a picture Sometimes when in the midst of a busy trip it can be hard to re- member to stop and appreciate each new moment. But the act of selecting a card and sitting down at a cafe or on a park bench to write out a few of your favorite memories can help you to pause catch your breath and remember what it is about travel that you love most to begin with. So on your next trip I challenge you to send a post card. Do it for you. I hope you love it. I hope your reader loves it. And I hope it helps you connect to a deeper appreciation of the places you visit. By Laci Paige 27 Old FashionDanish Apple CakeIt is that time of year Fall is here With fall comes lots and lots of apples and other great crops too so of course we are going to make an Old Fashion Danish Apple Cake. It is really rather simple and tastes so great. So lets begin. Ingredients 10 apples of your favorite kind or a mix of apples -We like sour apples for this recipe but you can use sweet ones too if you like. 1 vanilla bean 1 tablespoon sugar 1 lemon Water Directions Peel and core the apples and cut them into smaller pieces. Put them in a large pot. Pour the juice from one lemon and some water to cover the bottom of the pot. You dont need very much.Scrape the seeds out of the vanilla bean and on the cutting board mix it with the sugar. This step is important to make the vanilla seeds separate from each other. Then add the sugar and vanilla to the pot as well as the empty vanilla bean. Cook the apples on high heat for 10-15 minutes with a lid on. Stir once in a while. Turn off the heat and let cool. With a hand blender or potato masher mush the apples until you have a fairly uniform texture. Some peo- ple like to have lumps in their cake some dont so you pick what you like. We like it smooth. Now the apple part is done. Ingredients 4 handfuls of mixed nuts and oats -We used one handful of each hazelnuts almonds oats and walnuts. Roughly 60 g 14 cup of butter you might need to add a bit more. Sugar to your liking. We used about 100 g 12 cup. Add as much or as little as you like. Directions Chop the nuts and oats in a food processor until desired size. Melt the butter and sugar in a large pan. Wait until the sugar has dissolved and starts to bubble then add the nuts and oats. Stir continuously to avoid burning and remove from heat once the nuts have gotten a nice golden color and smells nice and toasted. If the mixture is too dry when you stir you can add a bit more butter. Pour onto a piece of parchment paper and let it cool. Whip 12 liter 2 cups of whipping cream. Now it is time to assemble the cake. You can do this two ways Make the cake in a large glass bowl or let your guests make their own in a smaller glass. We do ours in smaller glasses. First scoop a spoonful of apple mush into the glass then the nut crunch. Repeat once or twice more and finish with a dollop of whipped cream. And there you have the most delicious and easy to make fall dessert. -Enjoy Apple Mush Recipe Nut Crunch Recipe 28 What to Expect when Youre Expecting a kitten By Arielle Nieshalla Ok we all know how cute kittens are. A cat bed is some- thing completely up to your discretion. I didnt get one because lets be honest cats are gonna sleep wherever they want. For my kittens first couple days I lined the bottom of his carrier with a hand towel and a t-shirt I had previously worn. That way he became both ac- customed to my smell and more comfortable with his carrier a big help during trips to the vet later on. Youll also probably want to get some toys but Id suggest starting small so you dont overwhelm the little guy. That and theyll probably love your bobby pins and hair ties more than the most expensive cat toy in the world. Also obviously food Im not gonna lie this was the most overwhelm- ing part of the process for me. You walk into the food aisle and see a myriad of food wet dry kitten cat organic not organic 50 dif- ferent brands and 5 types of flavors within those 50 different brands and theyre all DIFFERENT colors. Obviously everyone has different things they want for the kitten and thats something youll have to fig- ure out yourself but heres one tip that no one told me about. Make sure that you buy cans that are specifically labeled KITTEN formula. All cat food is generally labeled formula which having grown up with lots of children around I thought was something only for babies. But tis not true with our furry pets. Youll want to make sure you get KITTEN food as it has more protein to help their little bodies grow. Things Youll Need Before Hand 29 The day has come Youre excited youre nervous maybe youre even scared and thinking you cant do this whole pet thing remember the cactus. First off you got this It seems daunting at first but youll easily fall into the pattern in a couple of days. Secondly I strongly recommend picking a time where you have those first couple days off. Youre going to want to acclimate your pet make sure he or she is comfortable but mainly its for you. Because you are going to worry a lot in those first days. Youre going to expect the world to end for your pet when you leave it doesnt and youre going to expect every- thing in your house to be ruined upon your return it wont. Taking time to get to know each other and see how your furry friend reacts to the new environment will do a lot to put your mind at ease. This is coming from the girl who checked her phone for texts FROM HER KITTEN on updates on how he was doing yeah its sick I know. Start him or her off in one small room a bathroom or kitchen so as not to overwhelm the little thing. Show it where the litter box is by gently plopping himher right in there. I dont know how but by do- ing that they magically know this is the place where I go potty. Let them explore the area the toys and you at their leisure. Gradually over the next couple days you can expose them to more areas of your place. This is an exciting and nerve wracking time where every little cough or weird eye blink makes you panic. Just rememberrelax. Hundreds of kittens get born in the wild every day and SURVIVE. If they can survive out there they can certainly survive whilst having a loving mommy or daddy to watch out for them. hands and arms as living teething rings and scratch posts. This is kind of inevitable but start training them young that its not ok to be rough with you because the bigger they get the more painful it becomes. You can do this by always having a toy on-hand to distract them with whenever they start gnawing away at you. This will start showing them that this is the thing to be rough with this is the thing to NOT be rough with. Sometimes scruffing them and using a firm voice or even a spray bottle is the best course of action. It may seem mean and youll hate yourself in the beginning but trust me its worth it. And to help with those scratches I would suggest applying lavender oil- it cleans- es heals and helps prevents scarring. Couple it with some good mois- turizer and youll be good to go. De-clawing Dont do it. Just dont. While it may be better for you and your furni- ture its actually a painful process for your kitten. Unlike the popular belief that its the equivalent of removing fingernails it is actually removing the last bone of each kitten toe. Ow There are these great things called Soft Paws which are like little caps you glue to the end of your cats claws. Its both humane and effective. You may need a partner to help during the application process but its not much harder than clipping your kittens nails and it lasts for a few weeks. I suggest giving it a shot while theyre napping. Potty Training Yes its a thing A real honest to goodness thing. You can train your cat to go on the potty and it actually WORKS. This helps if youre OCD like me and if you also want to save money like me. You can easily spend up to 30 a week on litter and its not the most pleasant or sanitary thing to have in your place. With potty training all you do is flush. The process itself can be a bit messy and takes about a month but it really does save a lot of hassle down the road. Obviously the younger you start them on it the faster theyll adapt. I started my kitten when he was around 13 weeks old and now he uses the toilet like a little gentleman. High fiving a million angels The Day Of Pet Insurance Dont be bullied into picking one right away or even picking one at all. Vets are obviously going to push it on you and make it seem like every cat owner has it most dont but do some research and see if its something you think will be necessary. I waited a couple months to see how my kitten fared if he was sensitive to things if he leaned towards getting sick etc. Every situation is different. You can only make the decision thats best for yours. Shots Again something vets will say you absolutely MUST have and again its something I know a lot of cat owners dont do and they have healthy cats. Theres a lot to consider with these if your cat is in- door or outdoor if you have other animals what your kitten will be exposed to etc. You can do SOME shots and not others. Just dont feel pressured to make a decision right away. Its ok you arent a bad kitten parent by doing a little research before committing. Feeding Just like people every cat is going to be different. And just like peo- ple every cat will have different appetites. Dont think you have to feed your kitten the exact amount the can says or even how much a friends cat eats. This may take some time to figure out but its an im- portant step. You may have to try different brands or flavors of food different amounts and different feeding schedules. It may sound challenging but trust me youll quickly become in-tune with your kittens needs. Scratching This was the hardest part for me to adjust to. Kittens just want to play Which is the absolute cutest thinguntil they start using your FAQs The Biggest Thing of All Now this is something no one warned me about and I doubt I would have listened if they had. Because you think you are always the excep- tion to the rule. Im here to tell you that you arent. You will become obsessed with your kitten. You WILL take about 100 pictures of your kitten each day. You WILL send those pictures to anyone and every- one. And they will NOT care as much as you do that your kitten is sleeping. Youll be convinced that your kittens quirks are cuter than every other kittens quirks mine waits till Im home to go to the bath- roomlike whaaaaaa. Instagram will become a giant opportunity to share with the world that you have the cutest kitten in all the lands. Which is sadly impossible because I have the cutest kitten in all the lands.
