With over 60000 attendees over the weekend the Con was a huge suc- cess and FLiP was there to cover it and bring it here for you. It all kicked off with Imperial Stormtroopers marching in Woz to the main stage and to the big reveal of Madame Tussauds San Franciscos Steve Wozniak wax figure. The Woz was chosen by public vote to be the next Silicon Valley innovator to be immortalized in wax. Tussauds artists spent two hours taking over 250 measurements of Steve and then went back to London and the team spent the next 4 months making his wax figure just right. The brand new 59 wax figure is valued at approximately 350000 After the welcome speech the Con was off and running. Our first visit was to the vendors hall chock-full of some truly talented artists and businesses. There were groups building a live life-size Iron Man suit made out of Legos. There were authors and artists and cosplay models doing signings and selling their goods. Theres no shame. But there is a fix. Its wise to set a budget for your cosplay as in all aspects of life. Not only does it cause YOU great disappointment to have an unfinished cosplay it often ruins your friends plans too when a member from the group cosplay is missing. Peruse these cosplay specific time and money management tips for completing your quality cosplay on time. Set A Deadline The number one rule to time budgeting is set a deadline. Whether you aim to finish for a specific event or not a deadline pushes you to work consistently on a project and heightens its importance. A little pressure is good. If you dont have a specific event coming up for which you want to wear your cosplay con- sider creating one. It could be a photoshoot or just a gathering of friends whatever it may be it will provide healthy motivation. Your deadline however is not the day of the event or the day before. Place your deadline a full week before the event to ensure you dont pull any all-nighters. You wont be happy with how your cosplay turned out and you place undue stress on your body. Ive put an end to my last minute ways due to all my gray hairs ... So you have a deadline but when do you start Of course it depends on the complexity of your project but as a minimum allow yourself 3 months. That might sound like a lot of time. Realistically it usually takes at least that long to put together a cosplay even a simple one. You can never predict what other obligations might spring up. Especially if youre attempting something you havent done before you cant really know how long it will take you. Furthermore this allows time to make samples and mock-ups test runs for your cosplay to guarantee it looks and functions how you imagine it will. 18 www.flipmagazine.netMay2016 Create a Breakdown With a start date and final deadline set you now need to set some mini deadlines. Break your cosplay down into parts shirt pants shoes gloves staff etc. Youll want to make a list so you dont forget anything not a mental list a hand- written or typed list. After youve broken your cosplay down into parts consider the compo- nents required to make each of those parts fabric thread zippers etc. Now you have a shopping list also not a mental list. With this you can estimate how long each part of your project will take to complete. Time estimation is a skill that relies on realism. Once again if youre attempting something you havent done before such as resin casting you dont know how long it will take. The tutorial might say it takes 6 hours but for your first attempt with something new you arent going to move as quickly as the pro who made the tutorial. It could take you two three or four times as long to figure things out and then reattempt the new technique before you get it right. You might even have to start over and pick up more supplies. This is the mindset you should have as you budget your time. Never assume the first attempt will produce the final product. So estimate realistically how long each part will take to complete and set mini goals for completing parts of the cosplay spaced evenly up until your deadline. The best place to start is with the most challenging parts of the cosplay like the things you need to research or havent tried before. Ideally you want to work on mul- tiple parts of the cosplay at once so that you dont exhaust yourself working on one thing and increase the likelihood of completing everything. Do the things you feel most comfortable doing towards the end of the project and the most challenging near the beginning. If youve made hundreds of bows before save that for last. Accountability One final time management tip accountability. You can set goals and deadlines for yourself but whos holding you to them If your friends arent already involved involve them or a family member to help keep tabs on your prog- ress. Give them a copy of your timeline so they can check if youre reaching your goals and provide encouragement. www.flipmagazine.netMay2016 19 Never assume the first attempt will produce the final product. Time and money management become closely linked when you break down the parts of your cosplay into components. After youve made up the list youll need to do some research on what methods youll be using to make your props your jewels your wig etc. Once youve decided how to make EVERY PART of your cosplay you can accurately estimate the cost of the cosplay. Using the component list you made which entails EVERY SINGLE ITEM you will need to complete your project create your budget. Look up the cost of items dont guess. When it comes to things like fabric where the price will vary you can still look at the average cost per yard of the type of fabric you need. The more research you do the more accurate your estimate will be. With your budget worksheet complete youre halfway done The research can be time consuming but its far more time consuming and costly to switch to a different plan in the middle of your project because something didnt work out how you guessed it would. Putting together a budget worksheet will allow you to determine whether the intended cosplay is something you can afford something you are capable of and something you have time for. The reason is mostly due to the fact that the presence of supporting characters was so strong that they took the spotlight away from the main characters. In fact why is there not a movie with Lex Luthor as the main character That would be insanely twisted. He was by far the most intriguing and unpredictable character. I could go on and on about him but lets get back to the main characters. I must admit I was one of the people who whined a lot about Ben Aeck being cast as Batman. I thought that Christian Bale was it and there was no way anyone could live up to that let alone the one who played Daredevil. I was wrong. Ben Aeck did well really well actually. I wanted to dislike it but he proved me wrong for sure. Superman was probably the reason I was skeptical about seeing this movie. I love Henry Cavill and he is perfect for the role but I didnt care for what writers did to the character development and storyline on his rst movie as Superman. Anyway BATMAN V SUPERMAN was okay when it came to scenes with Batman and Superman alone but it was awesome when it came to Lex Luthor and his unpredictable twists. The ghts were great especially when Wonder Woman entered the scene. Her character was mysterious and interesting in every way. And she really kicked ass. Basic at home workouts can keep you stag- nant with the common push-ups or lunges as staples to get you in shape. Not only do these workouts get extremely boring after a while but they also get your body in a state of pla- teauing sooner rather than later. In order to keep your body progressing and also to keep those results coming you have to get a little creative. The push-up plank dumbbell row to dumbbell tricep kickback is nothing short of that. This exercise introduces a series of move- ments that will work your core back arms chest legs and stabilizer muscles. Though this workout is a great exercise to get that overall body workout dont underestimate the conditioning you need to be in to perform this exercise. This workout is definitely for the more advanced exerciser and should always be performed focusing on form. With that being said dive in and feel the soreness even two to three days after youve taken it on to your new workout regimen. All you need for this movement is a set of dumbbells and a hard floor. 24 Struggling with jokes today So youll have to put up with this one liner. By Alexis Monahan Marco Beltrami The Man Behind the Music of Your Favorite Movies FLiP Magazine recently sat down for an interview with Academy Award nominated film composer Marco Beltrami. Marco first became a name in the industry after his work on the 1996 blockbuster hit Scream throwing away conventional horror music clichs and instead calling upon his concert music roots to explore a new sonic landscape. Nominated twice forAcademyAwards for Best Score first for 310 to Yuma starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale and shortly after for his score to 2010s groundbreaking Best Picture The Hurt Locker. Marcos newest film score was for the actionadventure movieGodsofEgyptavailableonDVDstartingMay31st. Marco was always interested in music as long as he could remember. He started in music club at just six years old. And although he knew he loved music he didnt know it would lead to composing. My parents didnt want me to pursue music he said and so Marco decided to go to Brown University and earned a liberal arts degree. Marco decided he still wanted to pursue music and so he went to Yale School of Music on a scholarship. Shortly after graduating he moved out to Los Angeles and a few months later he landed his job on Scream. Marco was mentored by many Hollywood heavyweights and he was even able obtain a fellowship with Academy-Award winning composer Jerry Goldsmith. Jerry taught me to be as economical as possible in your writing and to keep things as simple as possible for the desired effect. Just playable and clear. And thats something I really carry with me and its probably the most influential thing piece of advice. So what is the process of film composing you ask Its not a linear progressionits not like working from the beginning and going to the end its more like a question of figuring out what the elements are and picking some scenes seeing how they fit together in the picture and then sort of expanding from that. He says hes worked from the scripts before but finds it difficult because they are just words on I view every movie almost like a puzzle and sort of cracking the puzzle getting to the root of everything from which the tree of a score will blossom. 26 www.flipmagazine.netMay2016 the page and the directors vision hasnt been realized yet in order to set the music to. He prefers to wait until the editing room and start the process when the footage is in and the story is starting to come together. The most important and probably the most rewarding and fun part is I view every movie almost like a puzzle and sort of cracking the puzzle getting to the root of everything from which the tree of a score will blossom. The timing and those elements which are essential to the picture. That to me is a fun challenge but it can be anxiety filled as well cause sometimes it doesnt immediately show itselfsometimes you have to really workyou can be working for a couple of weeks and not have anything to show because you havent cracked the puzzle yet. But then after you do its just a question of filling in the blanks I think. For Marcos work on the new film Gods of Egypt he says working with director Alex Proyas was a bit more old school in that it was a very collaborative process and discussion of visions. After watching the rough edits of the film he envisioned Gods of Egypt as a very thematic film and so he worked on the themes firstlike a Horus theme a Set theme and a Beck and Zia theme. He then put these themes into the bigger picture. The part that I like the most is the beginning and obviously the end when you actually have musicians bring it to life Marco says. From actionadventure films like Gods of Egypt to horror films like Scream to dramas like The Hurt Locker and Westerns like 310 to Yuma Marco has composed for many movie genres. When it comes to choosing which films he wants to work on Marco says the genre is not the crucial thing. He focuses most on what speaks toinspires him the most. Its not that I prefer horror movies or anything in fact I dont really like horror moviesIve always been a cheap scare. I think the first horror movie I ever saw was Scream. And his best advice to aspiring composers I think there are a lot more opportunities now for people who want to become composers just because it is so much easier to make movies and there are so many little independent movies which is a great way to start honing your craft. Having a classic training or academic training I dont think is crucial to it. I think that having a dramatic sense a sense of picture is fundamental. And when those skills go hand-in-hand with musicianship skills then those are the key ingredients for having a great film composer. When you have just one or the other it becomes a little more challenging. www.flipmagazine.netMay2016 27 Q A B La Pi Q My girlfriend and I have about 5 weddings to go to this summer and I have no idea what Im supposed to wear. Whats the usual for a summer wedding A I wish I had a little more information from you to really give you a detailed answer. Your climate and the theme of the weddings come in to play. Since I dont know what those are the best advice to give you for such a special event is that overdressing is better than under-dressing. While planning your attire you should almost always consider a suit and also remember that lighter fabrics and colors are usually worn for summer weddings. Another thing to consider is what your girlfriend is wearing you dont necessarily need to color coordinate but you want to make sure that you look good together and dont clash. People take a lot of photos during weddings and you want to look good together. Regardless what you wear be sure to be respectful and enjoy your time in honoring the union of two people. Q Once and for all whats a normal penis size A There is no such thing as a normal penis size. But an average of several studies combined show that Average flaccid length is 2.6 to 3.9 inches. Average flaccid girth is from 3.6 to 3.9 inches. Average erect length is from 4.6 to 6.3 inches. Average erect girth is about 4.7. One other thing to take into consideration is heritage. According to the world map of penis sizes where individuals report in men in Congo have an average size of 7.1 inches and men in Nepal have an average of 3.7 and those in Russia report an average of 5.2. So while taking size into consideration think of where your ancestors came from. Approximately 50 of all men think their penis is too small. What some men dont know is that most women would prefer an average penis over a larger one. We should never forget those parts of our past. We remember so we can learn from these dark chapters of humanity. We must learn from our mistakes of the past or we will certainly repeat them The reason we have monuments statues etc. is not always to commemorate or honor something. Often times it is to remind us of the terrible parts of our history. I grew up in the South. Im not proud by any means of certain parts of our history. That does not mean we should pretend they do not exist. The Civil Rights Museum in downtown Birmingham depicts imagery and events from a horrible period of the South. Should we tear it down just because it is unpleasant Many people want to remove statues of Robert E. Lee. When I see a statue of him I think of a time when our nation was divided. When there was a conict of ideologies about what type of nation we would be. Yes slavery was part of that war too. The Civil War was a pivotal point of social moral and cultural evolution. Everything was not solved but it was a step in the right direction. In New Orleans there is a statue of Andrew Jackson on horseback. He forcefully removed thousands upon thousands of Native Americans--- --The Trail of Tears This was truly a dark page in a dark chapter of the near annihilation of a people. Are we going to tear his statue down Are we going to take his face o the twenty-dollar bill No we will not. We must remember these atrocities. Thomas Jeerson owned slaves and slept with slave women. I have not heard anything about removing his monument from Washington DC. Why He wrote the Declaration of Independence and was a Founding Father. Many people protested and disagreed with the Vietnam War. It was a terrible social trauma inicted on our national consciousness Should we remove it as well I am not saying we should remove either monument the point is we cannot just remember the good points in history and ignore the dark chapters. Statues monuments plaques are not always about honoring events and people. If we erase the pastit still happened Are we supposed to just collectively forget The answer is no. This idea of erasing dark andor unpleasant points in history in my mind sets a very very dangerous precedent. The rst time I heard read and saw anything about this notion of removing monuments and statues depicting dark pages of history all I could think of was the book 1984 by George Orwell. Now rst of all let us be clear I am not saying that is exactly what is occurring. However this book is worth mentioning briey. Anyone familiar with the book knows that the main character Winston Smith was a clerk at the Records Department at the Ministry of Truth. His job was to write and rewrite history to suit the state. Thus allowing the state Big Brother to manipulate public perception. If these monuments statues plaques etc. are taken down what would prevent someone from manipulating the past by twisting it around to suit their purposes We must remember the past or we are doomed to repeat it There are dark chapters stained with blood in humanitys past which occurred all over the world. Moments where our reason failed us where conicting ideologies fuelled by fear and hatred led to war and atrocities sometimes quite unfathomable. If we are to evolve further and be better as a species we must not erase history. We must study remember and most importantly understand these dark chapters. As should our children their children and so on. We must learn from it. Learning will never occur and never has by closing our eyes and pretending it never happened I have always believed you should write what you know My passions and fascinations include history philosophy mythology and psychology. I love to people watch. I get many ideas that way. I am an avid science ction fan. Science ction is based in our imagination our imagination propels humanity forward in all our endeavors. -Lewis Stockham Erasing HistoryBy Lewis Stockham WILD CARDS CINCINNATI BENGALS HOUSTON TEXANS 30 www.flipmagazine.netFebrary2016 Us football fans collectively hate the summer. Sure we can appreciate the nice weather barbeques by the pool and driving with the top down...but thats not the weather we crave. We like windbreaker cool during the day chilly at night leaves on the ground crisp fall weather. Ahhh can you smell the tailgating upon us Football season is almost here and by almost we mean three months away Its never too early to get into a debate about where teams are going to nish. Obviously even the geniuses on the FLiP sports sta cant predict injuries no we really cant so these are subject to change depending upon what conspires in training camp or the entire Patriots organization being suddenly suspended by the league. We absolutely do not see a repeat of last years Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers squaring o. In fact we dont even predict that either will make it to the Bowl this year. So without further ado FLiPs 2016 NFL Season Preview 2016 NFL SEASON PREVIEW By Jay Schuster EAST CHAMPIONS NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS Too much talent on this team especially with Brady still looking like Brady even at the advanced football age of 38 years old. Great offseason pickups at the skill positions on offense including Martellus Bennett and Nate Washington will only add to this teams firepower. Getting Dion Lewis back at RB should be a big boost as he was a terror before getting injured last season. The defense has loads of talent and should be able to match last years numbers. The Jets and Bills are still the top threats to New England but lack the elite QB play and weapons. A F C NORTH CHAMPIONS PITTSBURGH STEELERS Pittsburgh has loads of offensive talent on this roster. The core of Ben Roethlisberger LeVeon Bell and Antonio Brown is as good as youll see in the NFL. With an improving offensive line and a defense that finally started to show signs of playing Steeler football this season should see Pittsburgh take control of the North from the Bengals who had a disastrous collapse in the playoffs last year. SOUTH CHAMPIONS INDIANAPOLIS COLTS Here at FLiP we see a big bounce back season for the Colts. Andrew Luck had a below average year in 2016 and hes way too talented to string together two sub par seasons. With T.Y. Hilton and Coby Fleener the Colts should be explosive enough on offense this year to take some pressure off of their below average defense although one that did show improvement last season. The Texans will be a big threat to Indy with their addition of Brock Osweiler in the offseason to finally shore up the QB position for them but we like Indys roster enough to call them the South champs. WEST CHAMPIONS KANSAS CITY CHIEFS The Chiefs were the absolute hottest team heading into the playoffs last season. They had just won nine straight games to make it in as a wild card and after a blowout win against Houston they finally ran into a buzz saw known as the Patriots. They are returning their perennial MVP Jamaal Charles who is coming back from a devastating knee injury last year. Their defense is tough as nails and last years rookie CB Marcus Peters is a absolute shutdown corner. Even though DenveriscomingoffasSB champs last season and have a ferocious defense we dont believe that their QB situation Mark Sanchez is nearly good enough to take the divisionfromKansasCity. WILD CARDS ARIZONA CARDINALS NEW YORK GIANTS WEST CHAMPIONS SEATTLE SEAHAWKS I know a lot of people would like Arizona to take the title again this season but I just dont buy into Carson Palmers health being great for 3 seasons in a row. Hes had way too much of an injury past for me to be comfortable picking them here and as he goes so go the Cardinals. Seattle still has tons of talent on both sides of the ball and their defense played exceptionally well in the 2nd half of the season. I see a hungry Seahawks team not playing a first place schedule by the way coming out of the gates hot this year and expect them to take the West. SOUTH CHAMPIONS CAROLINA PANTHERS Carolina had a dream season last year. If any experts predicted a 15-1 record from them Id bow down and shake their hands. Cam Newton was easily MVP and the defense is as good as it gets. Although teams typically dont have that same follow-up season and defenses seem to run hot and cold from year-to-year Id expect Carolina to still take this division with ease. Atlanta and the others just arent good enough to give Carolina a push and getting a healthy Kelvin Benjamin back to add to Newtons offense will only add a big boost. NORTH CHAMPIONS GREEN BAY PACKERS Green Bay had a sub par year by their standards in 2016. They started off with an awful preseason injury to their all-pro WR Jordy Nelson that really hurt their offense. Follow that up with multiple injuries to their RBs TEs and OL and its amazing that they finished where they did and still managed to win a playoff game. Their defense played much better down the stretch and I dont think Minnesota will catch nearly as many breaks this season with a first place schedule. EAST CHAMPIONS DALLAS COWBOYS TheCowboyshaveagood chance to be the 2016 version of Washington. They are flying under the radar getting Tony Romo back healthy at QB this season and have a ton of weapons on offense. Picking up Alfred Morris from the Redskins free agent pile was also a genius move. Behind that ridiculously good offensive line in Big D Morris should take tons of pressure off of the passing game. The Cowboys defense played inspired last year but overall do not have much talent on that side of the ball. While we expect the Giants to have a nice bounce back season we dont feel the same way about the Redskins. A first place schedule unproven starting QB with way more pressure on him this season and a suspect defense should help elevate the Cowboys to the East title. N F C 32 SONGSYOUMUSTHEAR BEFOREYOUDIE50BYFELICELAZAE S haring your favorite songs with others can be like opening a personal portal into ones life experiences and what shapes us as a person. A song can mean so much to one person and so little to another. And at the same time one song can unite huge groups of individuals from dierent backgrounds and regions around the world who know nothing about each other but are all moved in the same way by that one song. Sometimes its the lyrical content that hits us on a deep emotional level because it brings up memories that we can directly relate to. Sometimes its the music that can either instantly lift our spirits reinforce our feelings of sadness or comfort us in our time of need. Its hard to describe why a certain song hits us in a certain way. Its not always something that can be analyzed and put into words. A lot of the time its a certain spirit to the song its a feeling. And that feeling changes over time. The initial feeling comes when you rst hear the song. Its new and brilliant as it hits your ears. You try to soak in every note. You try to feel every beat deeply in those rst few minutes. You know something special is happening. As soon as it ends you want to hear it again. You know that this song will stay with you for years to come. You know that youve made a deep emotional connection with it. Sometimes that emotional connection is related to who is with you when you hear the song. I remember when I was little my mom my brother and I heard The Way by Fastball for the rst time and the groove the arrangement and the words just made us all so happy. We instantly loved it. We all broke out dancing together. And as we got to know the song better every time it came on the radio we all sang along with so much passion. It was OUR song. That song captured that moment in our lives and every time I hear that song that moment lives on in my heart and soul. Im transported back to being a little girl with my mom and brother and if I close my eyes Im there again and all of those amazing feelings of love and happiness ood in. Music is such a powerful time machine. There are many songs that have touched me over the years and I cant imagine living without hearing them. Friends and family have also introduced me to many songs with a phrase like You MUST hear this. I have friends who on a regular basis send me songs and new artists to listen to because it hit them in a particular way and they must spread that feeling the music gave them. That feeling is so important. For most of us as humans that feeling we get from listening to music that truly touches us is a big part of our experience while living on Earth. So here are my top 50 songs in no particular order and 50 is not nearly enough so I know Ive left some out you must hear before you die. Some of them are popular some of them are hidden gems. Some of them I discovered on my own some of them I was introduced to by a friend. All of them touched me and gave me that feeling.
